Worlds Top Private Jets - The Gulfstream G550

August 27th, 2008

Gulfstream Aerospace introduced their G550 model business jet in 2003. Similar to the G500, the newer model is built for pure luxury. It’s also all about performance with this jet. Its range is increased to 6,750 nautical miles, due to reductions in aerodynamic drag. The Gulfstream 550 boasts the longest range of any business jet in the world.

It has a ‘PlaneView’ cockpit, consisting of 4 Honeywall DU-1310 EFIS screens, and a cursor-control system. It also has an enhanced vision system, and an infrared camera that displays an image of the front view on a head up display. The enhanced vision system helps the jet to land in lower-visibility instrument meteorological conditions.

The jet is an all-around masterpiece. The sleek exterior of the jet and the smooth and luxurious interior make the Gulfstream 550 a plane worth flying in. The Cabin pressurization can be maintained at the equivalent of 6-thousand feet as opposed to 8-thousand on a conventional aircraft.

This change in pressure makes for a significant improvement in passenger comfort. When gas gets trapped in the gastrointestinal tract, the middle ear, and the paranasal sinuses, the increased pressure of conventional aircrafts can cause discomfort and pain. But with the G550, the pressure is reduced, resulting in a comfortable journey.

How diamonds are mined

August 27th, 2008

Diamonds are forever, a girls best friend, and downright expensive. In order to put that diamond ring on your finger, someone has to mine, ship, process, inspect, polish, set, and ultimately sell that diamond. With all of these various steps, it’s no wonder why diamonds are among the world’s most expensive items. Of every diamond mined throughout the world every year, far less than half will be gem quality. What happens to the rest of the diamonds?

They’re put into two other categories: Near-gem quality, and industrial quality. In order to be stamped as gem quality, diamonds must display the highest standard of excellence. Trained eyes painstakingly seek out any flaws. If a diamond isn’t up to par, it never will be. It’s hit or miss in the diamond industry. But before they can be professionally graded, the diamonds must be mined.

Diamonds are mined throughout the world, most notably in Africa where the diamond trade has been the root of many evils. In order to mine the gems, two methods are used: Pipe mining or alluvial mining. The first, pipe mining, refers to the extraction of diamonds from volcanic pipes. This is a lengthy process which covers tremendous ground. On average, 250 tons of ore must be mined before a one-carat gem quality diamond is produced.

The HMS Anson was a French navy warship which served the British Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries. When the ship wasn’t in battle, it occasionally attended to the British royal family. During a storm in 1807, the Anson wrecked off of the coast of Cornwall, England, and the ship was virtually destroyed. After the loss of the Anson, many changes were made when rebuilding the ship, all placing high emphasis on safety and rescue techniques. Now, 200 years later, the same emphasis was placed on building a ship, only this time it is for pleasure.

Palmer Johnson, an experienced ship builder with a collection of maritime artifacts, including the actual bell from the original Anson, decided to construct his new Anson Bell on American soil. He set out to construct the safest motor yacht ever built, and the 156-foot Palmer Johnson Anson Bell was born.

The yacht not only meets the requirements of the highest level of Lloyd’s Register classification, but it exceeds requirements for damage stability and fire resistance. Anson Bell is able to withstand flooding of any two compartments onboard, which adds superior stability to the ship. The Anson Bell has six bulkheads, creating eight separate compartments.

A little about The Melbourne Cup, the leading horse racing event in Australia

August 21st, 2008

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s largest annual thoroughbred horse race. It is one of the world’s top races, and completely brings Australia to a standstill. All three-year-olds and over are eligible to compete in the race, and it covers a distance of 3,200 meters. It is regarded as the most prestigious 2-mile handicap in the world, and is held on the first Tuesday in November by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.

The race was originally held over two miles, but after Australia’s adoption of the metric system in the 1970s; the current race distance is 3,200 meters, knocking off the extra 18 which equaled the 2-mile mark. The record is presently held by Kingston Rule, who ran the race in 3:16.3.

The inaugural race was held in 1861 and was comprised of 17 horses competing for 170 in cash and a gold watch. It is rumored that the winner of the race, Archer, walked over 800km to participate in the race from Nowra, New South Wales. A crowd of over 4,000 watched the opening race, and the numbers would have been larger had it not been for the untimely death of explorers Burke and Wills.

What is the UIGEA

August 20th, 2008

Many disappointed gamblers gather together to discuss their country’s ban of internet gambling. On October 13, 2006, President George W. Bush signed a bill into affect that banned internet gambling. More specifically, banks and other credit cards, e-wallets, etc, which transfer the money back and forth. Though many see it as a clear-cut case of Christian values being forced upon a ‘free’ country, the logical see it as nothing more than the government’s way of cracking down on tax evasion.

If a person visits one of the United States’ legitimate casinos, i.e. one of the Trump monstrosities in Atlantic City, then he or she is taxed on their winnings. But if that same person has free reign to slowly drain ,000 from their internet account, ,000 at a time, how would it be taxed? Regardless of what is true and what is false, this situation is sticky for all gambling lovers.

This Nation of Nations, which was constructed to be an equal opportunity land, by the people and for the people, has always been about the few, discarding the many. In ancient Rome, members of the senate would crucify a citizen for not paying homage to the gods. Even in Tudor England, 2,000 years later, men and women were slaughtered for not abiding to the chosen faith.

Behind the gears of Patek Philippe

August 20th, 2008

There are quite a few watchmakers that hold their roots in Switzerland. One of the more expensive and exquisite brands is Patek Philippe & Company’s luxury watches. This upscale Swiss watch manufacturer is currently owned by the Stern family and is run by Henri Stern and his son.

Throughout the years, Patek Philippe watches have been adorned by distinguished clientele, such as members of royalty, movie moguls: stars and tycoons, and many other members of high-society’s rich and famous list. Patek Philippe is also renowned for constructing most of their own components used in their luxury watches.

In 1839, Antoni Patek started making his own brand of pocket watches in Geneva, along with his partner, fellow Polish immigrant, Franciszek Czapek. They parted ways in 1844, and Patek joined forces with French watchmaker Adrien Philippe in 1845. Philippe was the inventor of the keyless winding mechanism, which would prove to be one of the greatest advancements in watch-making history.

A casino which refuses to pay a jackpot

August 20th, 2008

What would you do with a million dollars? It’s a question we’ve all pondered at one time or another. For Aurea Privee, she could smell the sweetness of the bills being fanned in front of her face. She was so close to a million dollars that she could literally taste it. But close only counts in horseshoes, unfortunately, and Privee’s million-dollar dream quickly turned into a poor man’s nightmare.

Aurea Privee walked into the Fiesta Casino in Henderson and started playing the penny video poker machines. The retired Privee had an ongoing relationship with the Fiesta casino; mostly of the give-give variety. Privee played the machines, but rarely won. Privee claims she spent twenty minutes between her regular bingo games dropping her pennies into a video poker machine. After a string of mediocre hands, Privee finally caught the hand of a lifetime.

The buzzers sounded, the coins dropped, and hearts raced as Privee had suddenly hit the one-million dollar and eight-two cent jackpot. Excited to be Nevada’s newest millionaire, Privee was attempting to retrieve her money when an agent from the Nevada Gaming Control Board showed up unexpectedly. Upon ‘careful’ examination, the agent found that the machine’s maximum jackpot was supposedly set at ,000, 0,000 shy of Privees prize. So, why would a machine set at ,000 spit out ,000,000? It’s a question Privee wanted answered.

Born July 1, 1985, in Great Britain, Lewis Hamilton is electrifying fans of F1 racing with his caution-to-the-wind style, cat-like moves, and freakishly fast speeds. At 23 years of age, this youngster has already scored 8 wins, and looks to do much more damage to the circuit now that he’s right at home with team McLaren.

Like many other racers on the circuit, Hamilton started his career with karts in 1995. He took top honors in the Masters at Bercy in 2000, followed by a move to single-seaters in ‘01. Hamilton took part in the Formula Renault Winter Series that year and finished 5th overall. He would return to Renault the following year and finish 3rd in the championship standings.

His talent quickly rising, Hamilton took the championship in 2003. More wins in the F3 Euroseries before claiming the championship followed in 2005 with ASM. Hamilton’s leap to GP2 didn’t daunt him at all, as he won the title from Nelson Piquet Jr. with ART Grand Prix. Showcasing his natural racing ability, Hamilton pulled off the pass of the season with his aggressive and daring move from third to first at the Becketts complex at Silverstone.
